WAHM-hood 101: 3 Reasons Why You Should Be Choosy

photo from: pushupsandcarrots.wordpress.com
Being a newbie freelancer is quite a challenge. There's the matter of getting used to the payment scheme, the flexible hours, the lack of the usual corporate benefits, the competitiveness - and then there's the job-hunting part, which, by far is one of the first and biggest hurls you must overcome.

So why then do I say that you SHOULD be choosy when it comes to applying for jobs online? Well for a number of justifiable reasons! Here are some of them:

How to Survive As An Online Freelancer

It's been more than three years since I decided to leave the corporate world in exchange for a life (and work) at home. Did I make the right choice? Was I successful in the path I chose? I think I'd have to say yes on both counts - I'm still here, still surviving. That to me means I must be doing some things right. :)

A lot of people think working as an online freelancer is a bed of roses - you command your own rates, your own working hours, you can work in your pajamas, and you can work while watching TV. While all that is true, it doesn't have to translate to all these being 'easy'. In fact, I'd have to say being an online freelancer is a tad more difficult than being in the solid and structured corporate world.  But I've dwelt on that before in this post about why WAHMs get stressed.

WAHM-hood: 4 Things You Didn't Think You'd Need (But You Do!)

Just this afternoon, I realized I've come to a point in my WAHM-hood 'career' that I am itching for a change. I don't mean shifting back to corporate gear - just a change, anything to refresh my thoughts, my heart, my perspective... I am still reflecting on what that 'other road' to trod on is - but will keep this blog posted once I decide. :)

In the meantime, I wanted to share with you guys a few other realizations I've had about 'WAHM-ming', and this includes stuff (whether tangible or intangible) that I never thought I'd need in this home-based career but turned out to be necessary at one point or another (and another, and another, and another....)

WAHM-Hood: What Your Mind Needs To Start Working Online

I was lucky.

When I decided to go into full-time WAHM-hood coming from working in a call center, I had a good friend guide me patiently throughout the process. She had been working from home already for more than a year by the time I started, and she briefed me on what I need, what I should do, what I should not do...stuff like that. Without her, I would have been groping in the dark far longer... and I'd have given up at a certain point. When I tell you it wasn't all sunshine and butterflies when I was starting out, I really mean it. So Sam, I owe you major big time.

Thankfully now though, there are a lot of references online that Pinoy moms who want to start working from home can refer to. A Google search will help you heaps. So what is this post all about? Wala lang nakiki-advice. :)

Not so good news on a Monday morning...and I'm still smiling.

If there's one thing I learned about working from home in the past three years, it's that the old adage of "The only thing permanent is change" holds 100% true most especially in the world of online employment.

Unlike having a job in a regular office, working freelance means not having any 'security of tenure'. Despite and in spite of agreements and so-called contracts, you really never know when your boss' need for you will expire. It can be any given day really.
